Rachel Golub November 12 th , 2006 DOGS 128 recognized breeds – AKC  53 million dogs in the U.S. $10 billion spent on dog + cat food #1 contributing factor to death:  Obesity (table scraps) 2 nd  most abused animal Biannual exams – 2x per year 2 weeks – vaccinations Puppies and kittens can get Roundworm  lay eggs in the feces  can also end up the eyes (causing blindness) Hookworms   Zoonotic   very itchy Physical Examination Observations: Behavior Always have your animal on a leash or harness  owner brings in a stool sample (Deworming) Start at the nose and end at the feet o Eyes    Are they both open? Are they the same size? o Nose    Are both nostrils open? Is there any mucus? o Ears    Can the animal hear its name being called? Check for any bumps or scars on the body Check for fecal matter on or around the hind legs and tail
