Luby Brooke Luby Mrs. Robinson History 1302 June 4, 2016 Freedom to African Americans meant not being whipped, separated from their families, not being allowed to be educated, women not being sexually abused by their owners and being able to share rights and opportunities with American citizens ( Give Me Liberty , p.443). Once slavery was abolished, US citizens had a difficult time adjusting to the reconstruction of the United States. The South was more hesitant than the North so US army officials had to occupy the South, which offered the former slaves opportunities such as: marriages were legally recognizable, they were able to reunite with their families, could obtain employment, and had the right to vote (PowerPoint: Reconstruction). After the Civil War, landowners complained that freed women had withdrawn from their field labor and also their duties as house servants. They wanted to dedicate their time families, which had not been achievable during slavery. African Americans found it humbling and honoring to see their wives stay at home.
