Kenny Voelker November 6, 2006 ENG 101 Pope Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind What if we could just erase all our painful memories of someone with a simple procedure? Visionary director Michel Gondry ( The Science of Sleep ) explores this possibility in the awe-inspiring Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It is evident that Gondry, with the help of brilliant screenwriter Charlie Kaufman ( Adaptation, Being John Malkovich ), has created a true piece of cinema magic by creating an eye-popping visual spectrum that wraps itself around emotional, touching, and real characters. We are introduced to the protagonist Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) in the beginning of the film. He is a shy, socially-inept, and somewhat dark character. He decides to skip work and go to Montauk on a subconscious inclination. It is on the way there that he makes a connection with the unbidden and impetuous Clementine (Kate Winslet). They are complete opposites; however they fill in the gaps of each other’s personalities. We see the relationship blossom between Joel and Clementine, which eventually reaches its highest point in the beautiful scene where both of them are lying out in the middle of a frozen lake, surrounded by cracks (very symbolic of their relationship). After the opening credits are through, the movie gets thrown into a dryer and gets all tumbled and meshed, and I mean that in the best way possible. We soon learn that Clementine has erased Joel from her mind at a place called Lacuna Inc. after their break-up. Out of spite and
