Ch 10 campaigns and elections 10/17/07 Critical elections- really the only time where public has a great amount of impact on government and policies made - Windows of opportunity where electorate can completely reshape government - Aka realignments - Have results that may last for decades - V. O. Key: four types of elections 1. Realigning election/critical- everybody reshapes party 2. Maintaining election- same party is in power from election to election 3. Deviating election- shift where other party wins, this is only temporary 4. Reinstating election- standard party is back in control Process of realigning: 1. Cross-cutting cleavage- during election there is one important issue that polarizes the electorate and the party system 2. Major crisis- that makes parties to take a stance on a crisis 3. Shift are durable- must last for decades or longer 4. Might produce new parties or new party system- typically happens when both parties cannot fix the problem 6 main critical elections in history:
