Intro Video A.K.A. a goodbye to the old soviet ways Historical drama – released in 2003 but set in 1989 o 90 to 95% student approval rating on the film o Directed by Wolfgang Becker o Set in Germany o Rated R for brief language and sexual scenes o 121 minutes or just over 2 hours o Stars German stars and in the German language o Actually filmed on location Where are there? o Takes place in Alexander Plotz or Alex – large neighborhood transport club right in the middle of central Berlin It has great monumental soviet era architecture and big monuments The Mitta district is the most central burrow of Berlin What’s going on in the film? o Opens when the main character is a little kid in 1978 o They reference the first German to enter space who came from East Germany (the GDR) Real footage on the TV they are watching in the beginning All historical references they make in this film are real but they are fictional characters o Jumps forward and the bulk of the film is set in East Berlin which was, at the time, a part of the GDR or the German Democratic Republic which was a Soviet Puppet State The time frame is October 1989 until just after the reunification of Germany about a year later A whole lot changes in that one year o Official German Unity Day (when West Germany and East Germany became Germany) October 3 , 1990 How did there get to be an East and West Germany? o Remember back to world war 2 with the Nazis when they were trying to take over the world o All of the allied powers fought against Nazi Germany – UK, US, France, pretty much everyone in Europe aside from Italians who were kind of on the Nazi side, and the Soviet Union o Cold War where we hated the Soviet Union led us to ignore that they were once our ally
o Nazis start losing the war as we attack from both sides and we meet in the center of Europe We high five as we liberated Europe and we have met in the middle of Germany and Europe o Hitler dies and World War 2 is essentially over but where the Allied powers met in WW2 is where the iron curtain fell shortly after
