The E d for the molecule NO is 632 kJ/mol, while that of each of the N–O bonds in NO 2 is 469 kJ/mol. Using Lewis structures and the average bond energies for an N–O (210 kJ/mol) and an N=O (630 kJ/mol) bond, explain why the two molecules have such different dissociation energies for their respective N–O bonds and why E d for both N–O bonds in NO 2 are the same.
