English II Michael Romero 3S1 The Things They Carried In the short story The Things They Carried , Tim O’Brien presents the reader with a number of different things, literally and figuratively, which a few soldiers carried throughout a war. While out at sea I will have many things in common with these soldiers in terms of the things I will carry. The items the soldiers carried throughout this story ranged from things of necessity to things carried because of superstition. As did the items carried by the soldiers vary, so will the items I will carry during my first period at sea. “The Things they carried were largely determined by necessity.” But necessity was a term whose definition varied from soldier to soldier. Of course, they all carried essential items such as a flak jacket and poncho, but the men also carried items from home such as comic books and canned peaches which do not necessarily seem a necessity to others. As the first sea period approaches the things I will carry will also depend on
