Noozie Hamlet Essay AP English Hamlet is not as insane as people make him out to be. Hamlet shows many signs of being a perfectionist. This mentality helps to explain why and how Hamlet behaves in the situations presented to him in the play. Perfectionism is the mentality that everything should be done perfectly. Because this is impossible, it normally leads to depression. The depression is used as a motivational tool to help achieve perfection. Perfectionists also have a simplistic view of how the world works: there is perfect and there is less than perfect. This outlook tends to make them think in black and white terms. Analyzing Hamlet as a perfectionist helps explain why and how he behaves. It explains how Hamlet treats others, how Hamlet motivates himself, and how Hamlet analyzes himself and others. The way hamlet treats Ophelia, Polonius, Rozencranzt, Guildenstern, Gertrude, and Horatio all show signs of perfectionist behavior. Hamlet loves Ophelia. When he learns that there is no way to marry her, Ophelia became an imperfection. Hamlet transforms from loving Ophelia to making comments such as, “Lady shall I lie in your lap?. .. Do you think I meant country matters?” (109-113). These remarks are designed to suggest that Ophelia is a whore. Hamlet is resorting to the meanest insults he can muster now that she cannot be his. This frustration in her and dealing with her in extremes is a perfectionist way of dealing with this situation, not simply insanity.
