Symbolic Interactionist Theory Strengths: -More than one “normal” family form -Understanding of family based on members’ view points Limitations: - Difficult to test empirically - Focuses on individual and ignores role of larger social context Social Exchange Theory: -People use their resources to bargain and secure advantage in relationships. -Grew out of an economic perspective on social relationships. Focus: -Rational decision-makers -Behavior =rewards -costs -Equity, fairness (getting out what you put in the relationship) -Resources -Tangible (social status, money) -Intangible (sense of humor, attractiveness) -Family rewarding Example: -Relationship satisfaction -Comparison Level of Alternatives (CLA) -Exit costs (children, house, basically what you leave with when  separating) Strengths: -Uncomplicated explanation of human behavior Limitations: -Emotions ignored -Altruism ignored -Costs and rewards individualized Family Life Course Development Theory: -Family is the unit of analysis -Family changes in predictable ways over time -Focuses on stages of the family life cycle Focus: 1
