Megan Kellen SOC 200 – Foundations of Sociology Research Paper #3 – October 4 th , 2007 The first article is called The Culture of Fear: Why Americans Are Afraid of the Wrong Things by Barry Glassner. One of the first things he points out is the way that American’s jump to conclusions about crime and chaos before we have any idea. His example was the Oklahoma City Bombing in which we panicked about Arabs and articles were written about Middle Eastern terrorism in the New York Times and New York Post . It then turned out that the “terrorists” were two American guys. They were right-wing militias who then also became scary to Americans. The superpredator killer kids as in school shootings have seemed to increase while rates have actually declined by 30 percent (Glassner 1999). Media and talk shows report every incident with every gory detail. Three times as many people died from lightning than from school violence, but the news conveniently does not report that (Glassner 1999). Gun control is an issue because we are considered “gun crazed” in this country. Yet the significance of gun use
