P a g e | 1 Megan Kellen SOC 351 – Social Psychology Summary/Synthesis Paper #9 – December 5 th , 2007 Today’s Constructive Social Reality Part ten, the last in Cahill’s textbook includes two readings: The Dissolution of the Self by Kenneth Gergen and The Self in a World of Going Concerns by Jaber Gubrium and James Holstein. Both of which centralize around the effects of social life on our self constantly changing before our eyes. Today, most people believe in the theory that there is only one true self, while there are sources from outside that try to influence or modify this foundation. In the first reading, The Dissolution of the Self , Gergen analyzes the psychological consequences of the changes in the character of human social life. Media such as television, movies, newspapers and magazines put us in contact with fictional worlds and characters as well as actual ones. Gergen calls this “social saturation” pointing out that it builds a more intense self. The voices and actions do not coordinate while these
