Be “CineLiterate” Aesthetics – pleasing The Sphere of Aesthetics – what, how, why, … , a film is pleasing. 1) Film as a: a) Technology – the recreation of life in motion began in the 19 th Century. i) Persistence of Vision – the ability of the eye to see a still image for 1/16 th of a second after it’s initially viewed. (1) Thaumatrope – first toy that exemplifies persistence of vision. ii) Still Photography . (1) Edward Muybridge came up with “ Series Photography ” by placing 24 cameras next to each other and taking pictures in succession. iii) Motion Picture Camera – created by John Marey by rotating 12 plates in 1 second. (1) By 1929 they came up with today’s standard of 24 images in 1 second. iv) Celluloid – the material that the images are put on. v) Printing Press . vi) Projector . **Christmas week, 1895 in a Salon in Paris, (made by Lumiere Brothers) people saw the first 5, 1-minute movies....
