Wilcox - University of Pittsburgh Unit 5 Reading: Chapters 19 + 20 In this unit the preparation and reactivitis of a variety of acyl compounds were discussed. Carboxylic acids, esters, thiol esters, amides, acyl halides, and acid anhydrides were of specific interest. The fundamental reaction process for this unit is nucleophilic substitution. The following processes all occur by nucleophilic substitution (an addition-elimination process) and the student should be able to illustrate the detailed mechanisms for these processes. I. Mechanisms . a. Acid catalyzed reactions of carboxylic acids and alcohols (ester synthesis). b. Base catalyzed reactions of alcohols with esters. c. Acid catalyzed reactions of alcohols with esters. d. Reaction of acid chlorides with alcohols. e. Reaction of acid chlorides with amines. f. The Hell-Volhard-Zelinsky reaction. g.
