Sharing or copying these notes is illegal and could end note taking for this course LECTURE Good morning, I would like to get started. I want to pick up from where we were last Friday when we talked about marriage and gender and remind us that gender is a pervasive category that organizes our identities in a variety of institutional contexts including the family, work place, politics and in the psyches of the children who we raise, which is how gender is so easily recycled from one generation to the next. We do not have a lot of time to go into gender but it is an important perspective. I asked you a few weeks ago to do a quick-write where I asked you to talk about the ways there are parallels between the sociological perspectives on race and gender and sex differences. I want to submit to you that you probably should think about that because you will probably have an exam question that will ask you to look at these literatures side by side. There probably will also be a question about comparing racial groups’ experiences but you already did that in paper two. There is always more to say and I can target and tweak some questions and point you to some particular author’s works and say compare this author on this group to this author in another group. I will distribute the questions at the end of this week and you will have to write on two of them. You will have a choice so people can go with their strengths. It also is in the spirit of the take home exam that requires you to do a bit of stretching. You do not have to learn things you never heard of but you will have to go a little bit deeper. You will write 2 three to four page papers. You will be begging for more space but we cannot give it to you. We have to grade the papers in 72 hours. You better write clearly and crisply. The minute the moving pen of the reader stops you can start to see the points begin to be deducted, so give as much help as you can to your reader to make your ideas understood. Your papers will be given back today and the readers will be holding office hours and I will let you all know what they are later. Send your reader an email before you meet them about what you thought was misunderstood in your paper. Remember, do not go in a spirit of antagonism but go in a spirit of inquiry. Let me tell you a few things about gender and then I have this video. The sociology of gender concerns with the disparities in power between the sexes. It is concerned with their disparities in employment, earnings and wealth. You may want to say that, of course, it makes sense because women and men are as different as Adam and Eve, but women do not think that is
