Week 4 – pg. Visual Design 1. Elements of Visual Design a. Costume, hairstyle, makeup b. Décor i. Set – studio-built, location, and computer generated. ii. Set dressing iii. Prop c. Lighting i. Three-point lighting system 1. Key Light – towards subject. 2. Fill Light – what key light doesn’t get. 3. Back Light – light placed behind subjects. ii. Direction of Light – creates meaning 1. creates depth, halo effect, makes you look better with use of lack of light… iii. Quantity of Light 1. High key – everything is lit. Creates flatness, no shadows. 2. Low key – creates contrast. Many shadows. 3. Harsh light – shows all imperfections. Used in Hud . Shows people as harsh, dry, and dusty. 4. Soft/Difuse light – deflected off something (reflective). Before sun rises or sets. iv. Film Stock – film paper which images are printed on. 1. Fast – needs less light, turns image grainy. 2. Slow – a lot of light, sharper image. v.
