Sperling's Sensory Memory experiment
• Letters are flashed in rows
• Partial memory test
• Tone is played to tell participant which row should be recalled
• Sensory memory causes motion to appear fluid or audio to appear the same
Short Term Memory (aka working memory)
• If information is really important, it will be encoded into short term memory ○
Requires conscious awareness
• Working memory is the most accurate choice of words because it's actually more active
than a passive process, which is what we initially thought it was
○ Atkinson and Shiffrin, the guys who came up with the three part model, initially
named it short term when they assumed it was a passive process
○ New guys, Baddley and Hitch, realized it was more dynamic.
• Shortterm is like a workbench with many tools that are used to create
something
• Tools may be pushed to the side as you use other tools, and then
• We also actively will retrieve things from long term memory and then work on
things in short term where we can manipulate it and think about it
• Brief storage, can store information but for a short amount of time
