Unformatted text preview: Engr. 2300: Thermodynamics (Winter 2005) Exam 2 (March 18, 2005) (Open Book, Open Note) Name: ID: Problem 1 [30 points! A piston-cylinder system contains air at 60 kPa, 290 K and a volume of 0.0] m3. A constant pressure process gives 54kJ of work out. Find the final volume and temperature of the air. Problem 2 130 points! A piston-cylinder contains 1 kg of water at 20 “C with volume of 0.1 m3. By mistake someone locks the piston, preventing it from moving while we heat the water to saturated vapor. Find the final temperature and amount of heat transfer in the process. Problem 3 140 points! A steam turbine receives water at 9 MP3, 600 I3C at a rate of 36x103 kg/h. The exit temperature of the turbine is 30 °C and the quality of the steam is 0.9. Assume no heat transfer, no change in kinetic energy and no change in potential energy. (a) Find the total turbine power output (15 point) (b) If the turbine lost 7'.2><105 kah heat to the environment, what is the power output (15 points)? (0) If the inlet and exit velocity of the steam are 70 mfs and 140 mfs respectively, what is the total power output? Assume no heat transfer, no potential energy change (10 points).
