Moving beyond technological determinism. Communication for social change does not seem so loaded as it is because in the past the west has just been telling everyone else what to do. Number of communication programs created to promote social change through new technologies were listed on Tuesday’s guest lecture. New media changes consumption habit New media changes culture [Facebook, cell phones] What is sustainable social change? Long lasting [clean drinking water in a country changed attitude towards drinking water] Will stay intact even after campaign has ended. Develop capacities in community that change and empower people to carry on with the shift. Should be understood as a communication process where we work together, not in a top down process where people tell us what to do. Can convergent media support social change? Jenkins: Convergent media are more participatory and bring social change Carpentier: What do you mean by ‘participation’ in the media?
