COMM 387 – ON-LINE COURSE ADVERTISING & PUBLIC RELATIONS AS SOCIAL CONTROL On-Line Instructor: Sut Jhally Course Administrator: Chris Boulton – comm387@comm.umass.edu This course builds upon the foundation established in COMM 287. It deals with the following topics: Part One: The major focus will be on the role that advertising plays with regard to the construction of gender identity and gender socialization. Central to this discussion will be an examination of the related issues of sexuality and sexual representation and the role of advertising within this. The work of social anthropologist Erving Goffman and his notion of gender rituals will form the basis of much of our work in this section as we seek to answer questions such as why are we seeing these particular images now? whose visions of the world do they embody? whose visions are marginalized? what effect do these images have on society? why are these images so attractive to us? Part Two: In this section we will focus on the relationship between advertising expenditures and the structure of our present media system. We will
