Olfaction Stimulus for Smell: Volatile substance gives off vapors -- invisible gas molecules Must be soluble in fat olfactory receptors surrounded by fatlike substance -- mucosa. Most air entering your nostrils & mouth flows down throat to lungs Wisps of air rise up into nasal cavity circulate around a series of baffles (3 bones) circulation warms & humidifies air Improves smell acuity (like bones in middle ear) tiny hairs lining the nasal cavity remove dust & debris When nose is congested, passages of nasal cavity are narrowed. Limits the odorous vapors that can reach the receptors dulls sense of smell removes olfactory component from taste Olfactory Sensory Neurons (OSNs) Sit on the olfactory mucosa -- ceiling of nasal cavity cilia embedded in mucus lining the nasal cavity olfactory receptors lie on cilia of OSNs.
