Unformatted text preview: February 12, 2008 1. Why dont colors appear to change (much) when lighting conditions change? If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to see it, does it have color? There is a correct answer. What is it & why? Color constancy Perceived color of an object remains (approximately) constant under different illumination conditions. Factors accounting for color/lightness constancy: 1. Chromatic Adaptation Adaptation to dominant wavelengths in the incident light (e.g., incandescent illumination in homes) Factors accounting for color/lightness constancy: 2. Effect of surroundings Color constancy works best when an object is surrounded by many colors ratio of reflected wavelengths Illumination Bright Dim 100 units 10 units White paper (90%) 90 9 Dark gray paper (10%) 10 1 Ratio of incident light reflected remains the same. Perception corresponds to this reflectance ratio Reflectance = albedo Perception of lightness: not related to the amount of light reflected by object related to the percentage of light reflected by object Factors accounting for color/lightness constancy: 3. Ability to distinguish between reflectance edges and illumination edges....
