A True Metamorphosis All throughout the story, there are many themes that prevail, but at the center are the familial relationships that are so greatly affected by the metamorphosis of the stories protagonist, Gregor Samsa. While the relationship between Gregor and his father seems to be a central theme throughout the story, the relationship between Gregor and his sister Grete is the most important. It is with Grete that Gregor has any sort of connection after he undergoes his metamorphosis. Grete’s significance throughout the story is found in the changing relationship that her and her brother Gregor have. It is Grete’s changing feelings, actions, and speech toward Gregor, paired with her coming of age that corresponds with Gregor’s own metamorphosis. While Grete seems to undergo a positive metamorphosis from child to woman, the metamorphosis that Gregor undergoes seems to be his final demise. In a sense, as Gregor sits in his room wasting away, his sister Grete seems to be flourishing into a sexual being. Out of everyone in the family, it is Grete who initially tries to do whatever she can to help Gregor. She goes as far as trying to find out what he eats, attempting to make him as comfortable as he can be, and doing whatever she possibly can to help him. In an act of kindness, Grete “brought him a wide assortment of things, all spread out on an old newspaper: old, half-rotten vegetables; bones left over from the evening meal, caked with congealed white sauce; some raisins and almonds; a piece of cheese, which two days before Gregor had declared inedible; a plain slice of bread, a slice of bread and butter, and one with butter and salt” (24).
