In class notes: Kidney and liver Nephron – functional unit of kidney Nephro/ renal – kidney Gull bladder – horses do not have Horses Right kidney- heart shaped Left kidney – kidney shaped Kidney – cortex and medulla Renal artery and vein – blood flow in and out One afferent two efferent Hematocrit (red blood cell count)- is higher in the renal vein than that of the artery Unilateral compensatory hypertrophy When take out one kidney the other kidney will go through this Going to grow and do the function of both Remaining organ grows bigger!! Doesn’t work with lungs Can take out lopes of liver(2/3)- will regenerate Works with o Testicles Gonads/ovaries Ovulation rate wouldn’t change much o Kidneys Kidneys – lumbar region nephrectomy – removal of a kidney urogenital system Urine and genital system Bladder ventral to cervix o Stores urine Urine expelled through urethra Ureters – carries urine from kidney to bladder o Plug into the neck of the bladder, come in at an oblique angle o Moves urine through peristalsis Even if bladder is full can put more urine in it Because of architecture presses up against wall and prevents back flow Supernumerary – a number higher than normal Accessory sex glands – exocrine glands Sex glands that put fluid in ducts Atrophy when remove gonads Adrenal gland Not always cranial to kidney Has own artery and vein Nephrons
