Successful patient identity management is extremely important for hospital administrators and practitioners to achieve for quality patient care. Patient identity management or PIM is basically defined as the “ability to ascertain a distinct, unique identity for a patient, as expressed by an identifier that is unique within the scope of the exchange network in addition to the given characteristics about that individual such as his or her name, date of birth, as well as even an individual’s gender.” (Managing Patient Identity Across Data Sources, 2012). Through patient identity management and the usage of the health information exchange or HIE, a physician is capable of gaining access to complete healthcare data regarding a specific patient. (Managing Patient Identity Across Data Sources, 2012). This allows the physician to then make better informed decisions at the patient’s point of care. (Managing Patient Identity Across Data Sources, 2012).
