Disciplinary practices of femininity Bartky – “Femininity, Foucault and…” Ideal femininity isn’t born, it’s made 3 ways the body is regulated: 1. Body itself – shape, size, grooming 2. Comportment – carriage, poise, walk 3. Ornamentation – clothing, jewelry, make-up Men don’t care as much – stakes are higher for women who don’t adhere to these practices as opposed to men Women shouldn’t take up space, but people have access to us by an economy of smile/touch These practices become normalized, so that we don’t even realize we are doing it Bordo – “The Body and the Reproduction of Femininity” Issues of the body – anorexia Display and ornamentation of our bodies Issue of resistance of what is said “ideal” *The body is a medium of culture – we put codes on it – it reflects cultural norms Like Foucault said, our bodies are regulated and managed – taking care of our bodies is putting culture on them and managing them Can discipline our practices Body is a site of struggle “Embodied protest” – the protest is coming from your body Decrease in social regulation Increase in bodily regulation Disease symptoms are exaggerations of ideal feminine attributes Anorexia, hysteria, agoraphobia Arise in crisis moments, counter-productive, self-defeating Body is protesting society’s norms and oppressions A form of resistance that is not necessarily effective Functions paradoxically – resisting while colluding Bordo’s Solution: distinction between useful body and intelligible body Useful body: the practices we engage in, ways in which we make the intelligible body complete Intelligible body: the ideal – media representations Rhetoric of freedom Be skeptical of the “freedoms” of choice we have and how it is being framed for us Blinds us to seeing these practices as disciplinary practices

Duquette Smith MSLO produces a constitutive rhetoric which helps the development of subjects who: 1. Are domesticated and self-disciplined 2. See the home as therapy 3. Express themselves through consuming The constitutive rhetoric for MSLO produces a subject who is domesticated and self- disciplined, even if they work outside the home, and views themselves as Martha’s student MS is the instructor for her audience who emphasizes discipline, providing rules and opinions in order to get the audience to monitor themselves – and they do this and are guided to a “better lifestyle” It’s about self-discipline, not being disciplined by Martha Discipline through organization, lifestyle, meaningful life, student/teacher, home as therapy Martha makes “choosing” the home look reasonable and intelligent Martha offers disciplining the home as a solution to the struggle of “choices” women have to face. Doing this allows women to feel in control over one part of their lives.
