Part I : Theme Tracker- At the end of the Theme Tracker Road are two themes found in "Androclus and
the Lion." In the boxes that include the cars, add textual evidence from the story that helped the
themes develop.
Part 2 : Theme Analysis
The first theme of (Androclus and the Lion) by (James Baldwin) is (small acts of kindness can go
a long way) One event that shows this theme is (" Then the hungry lion rushed in. With a single bound he
reached the poor slave. Androclus gave a great cry, not of fear, but of gladness. It was his old friend, the
lion of the cave" ). This shows the theme because (the lion saved Androclus because he was so kind to
the lion.). Another place in the story that supports this theme is ( He took the end of the thorn in his

amazing friendships). An example of this theme is shown when ( And they lived together in Rome
for many years ). This illustrates the theme by (the example supports the theme because if
Androclus never helped the lion they would have never lived free in Rome together). The theme
of (small acts of kindness can make amazing friendships) is also evident when ( He jumped about
like a dog and licked the hands and feet of his new friend ). This example supports this theme

because (it shows that Androclus and the Lion are now friends because of Androclus act of
kindness). As you can see, the themes of (small acts of kindness can go a long way) and (small
acts of kindness can make amazing friendships) are developed throughout (Androclus and the
Lion).
