Writ 140/JS211 Alice Bardan Fall 2007 Assignment 3 Representing the Holocaust: How Much is Possible, How Much is Permissible? Purpose: For this essay, you will view two dramatic films about the Holocaust, Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List and Roberto Benigni’s La Vita è Bella ( Life is Beautiful); both films were controversial even before they were released, and they engendered a great deal of passionate criticism, pro and con controversy that continues into the present. You will also sample some of the criticism and then, choosing one film for your primary subject, write your own essay that is both a response to the critics and an expression of your own critical view . In that essay, after summarizing the critical positions others have taken in regard to the film, you will defend and/or attack the film both as a project and as a finished work of art. Readings: 1. Spielberg’s Holocaust: Critical Perspectives on Schindler’s List . Edited by Yosefa Loshitzky. (on reserve at Leavey library) intro, article by Bartov, Omer, by Harman,
