1. Asteroid: lager than 50m, small rocky objects mostly found in Mars and Jupiter asteroid belt, too small to have geo activity, leftover rocky planetesimals, largest: Ceres 2. Trans-Neptunian objects: small objects orbiting beyond Neptune e.g. Eris, Pluto (dwarf planet, has not cleared the neighborhood around its orbit, not a satellite) 3. Comets: small objects made of rock and a substantial amount of ices, when coming close to the sun, ices vaporize and forms a coma. Radiation pressure and charged particles emitted by the sun pushes the gas away from the comet and forms the tail - from the Kuiper belt that extends from 30 AU to 50 AU from the sun - from the hypothetical Oort cloud that extend to 50,000 AU from the sun {nucleus(mostly water ice, some solid dust), coma(sunlight evaporates comet surface, cloud of gas &dust), tails(pushed by solar wind)} 4. Meteoroids: can be rocky or icy, stony or metallic debris in space, bodies smaller than asteroids. When they burn in Earth’s atmosphere, they become meteors. When they hit the ground, they are called meteorites(stonys, irons, stony-irons). Can see a meteor shower when earth passes through the comet’s orbit 5. Terrestrial Planets: Jovian Planets: -smaller size and mass -larger size and mass -higher density -lower density -made mostly of rock and metal -made mostly of rock, metals, and hydrogen compounds -solid surface -no solid surface -few moons and no rings -rings and many moons -closer to the sun with warmer surfaces -farther from the sun, with cool temperatures at cloud tops 6. Temperature controls what type of planets are made of. hot (metals and rock could condense), cold (ices can condense in addition to metal and rock) 7. Planetesimals: -swept up to become part of the forming planets. –ejected to Oort Cloud. – sent into the inner solar system to collide with terrestrials.
