Topic 9: Change interventions Learning outcomes You will explore (Ch 18 & 27): What a 'change intervention' is (Ch 18, p 335; Ch 27, p 433); Understand each of the two typologies: 1. Who does what;2: Focal issues, specifically the change interventions of Strategic, Human Process, Techno-structural, and HR (Ch 27); Explain the four main factors which need to be considered when selecting interventions (Ch 27) 2
Interventions Def’n:“…a set of sequenced planned actions or events intended to help an organisation increase its effectiveness.” (Cummings & Worley 2001, p. 142) Aim:Purposely disrupt the status quo in order to move the organisation towards a more effective state (Waddell et al. 2014, p. 149) 3
Change Typologies: A range of interventions can be used to move an organisation towards its desired state: Typology 1: Focus onwho does what Typology 2: Focus onthe issueto be addressed 4
Typology #1: Interventions based on who does what Experts working to solve system-wide problems Facilitators working with individuals to help them develop the capability to identify and manage their own problems Facilitators working with groups to help them develop the capability to identify and manage their own problems Whole system interventions to improve capability for future performance 5
Experts tend to be brought in when there is: 1.Only an occasional need for a particular expertise within a business unit 2.A need for ‘cutting edge’ expertise with a depth of knowledge and a breadth of experience 3.An urgent need to deliver a solution ANY PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE USE OF EXPERTS?
