15 Tips on How to Get Ahead on the Job 1. Smile. Research indicates people who smile are perceived to be more intelligent than people who don’t. 2. Don’t spend a lot of time on unimportant things, even if you are good at them. Set priorities and allot time for them. 3. Walk 10 percent faster than you normally do. Communicate that you are a per- son with a mission who is eager to get the job done. 4. Volunteer for responsibilities outside of your job description. Show that you are a leader who can work in various departments. 5. Be confident when writing reports. Use strong, active, positive words. 6. Know when to approach the boss. Find out, maybe from the secretary, when your boss is most available. 7. Write brief notes of thanks. It is amazing how few people take the time to express gratitude. 8. Don’t say anything negative about anybody unless you want to take the chance with your career.
