Angelicca Anne WongInstructor NowickiChemistry 162 Lab16 March 2016Testing for Hydrogen and Oxygen GasesIntroduction:Chemistry is all about chemical change. A chemical change is the change of substances into othersubstances through a reorganization of atoms. When a chemical change occurs, a chemical reaction hasoccurred. There are five indicators that a chemical reaction has occurred. The five indicators do not haveto occur at the same time (and usually don’t). One of the more obvious indicators is the production of agas. To know if a gas is being given off is if bubbling is occurring in the container. In this lab, hydrogen(H2) and oxygen (O2) gases will be collected and then tested for its presence.Procedures:{Refer to “Instructions” section of provided lab sheet.}Observations/Discussion:Experiment #1:In a gas collection apparatus, a combination of the following chemicals was heated to collect H2: a smallqualitative amount of copper sulfate (CuSO4), a piece of zinc (Zn), and 5mLof hydrochloric acid (HCl).
