Exerts bacterial autolytic effect by inhibition of certain PBPs related to the activation of a bacterial autolytic process. To treat GI infections and genitourinary infections (other than gonorrhea). Chest pain, edema, thrombophlebitis, Anaphylaxis, facial edema Use cautiously in patients with mononucleosis and cephalosporin hypersensitivity. Avoid giving ampicillin to patients with mon- nucleosis because of increased risk of rash. Monitor patients for anaphylaxis, which may be life- threatening. Notify prescriber if patient has evidence of superinfection; expect to stop drug and provide appropriate treatment. Monitor patient for diarrhea. Classification Contraindications Side Effects Functional: Antibiotics Chemical: Semisynthetic amino-penicillin Contraindicated to hypersensitivity to any penicillin, infection caused by penicillinase- producing organisms.
