IMPROVEMENTS TO INCREASE THE QUALITY OF HEALTHCARE 2 Abstract The reformation of the health care delivery system is necessary to address the issues surrounding the quality and value of healthcare in the country. The health care quality improvement measures are crucial in addressing the high costs of health care, poor quality of Medicare given to patients and the high number of Americans without health insurance coverage. Improvements should be geared towards ensuring that patients receive the right care when required and. These improvements should also ensure that all people remain healthy regardless of their age, gender or income level. Improvements to Increase the Quality of Care
IMPROVEMENTS TO INCREASE THE QUALITY OF HEALTHCARE 3 The issue of whether the improvements in the delivery of care will increase the quality of healthcare has been an ongoing area of debate. In the past, there were many individuals without access to care. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) was signed into law in 2010 and since then the uninsured rate of 13% is down from 22.3% for ages ranging from 18-64 (“Obama: Uninsured Rates”). Affordable Care Act, also acknowledged as Obamacare, is legislation that is geared toward providing affordable and quality health services to all Americans. The introduction of the Electronic Healthcare Records (EHRs) system in the healthcare sector is a big move in improving healthcare quality in the country. This system will not only be beneficial to the health care personnel but also to the patients. The role of the ACA is to improve the quality of care and the carefulness in which healthcare is delivered while minimizing cost (“Quality of Care & Delivery Systems | Medicaid.gov,” 2016). The Acts focuses healthcare organizations on developing ways that will improve the quality of health by indicating the quality rather than the quantity of care, keeping costs down, and providing excellent customer support. Further, the Act has as one of its major goals the assurance that every American has insurance regardless of their socio-economic status. It is also geared toward protecting American citizens from fraudulent actions of the insurance companies that usually increase patient costs or restrict health care services as a result of the insurers increasing the rates. The new health care law includes amelioration to the affordability, quality, and availability of health insurance and new cost cutting measures, rules, and statutes for both public and private health insurance companies and the health care industry” ("Affordable Care Act Facts,” 2016, p. 1). The ACA has been advantageous in that insurance has become more affordable to a large number of people and thus many more Americans have health insurance. The number of Americans without coverage has dropped tremendously since the enrollment in 2013 (Young, 2015). The
IMPROVEMENTS TO INCREASE THE QUALITY OF HEALTHCARE 4 Act also ensured that there were no time limits on patients receiving care.
