Psychology 11/15/07 Human Aggression America is one of the most violent societies Agression – intentional behavior aimed at causing pain Why are people aggressive? o Evolutionary Theories Freud Darwin – people who survived had to be aggressive o Learning Theories Frustration-Aggression Theory – we all have a goal, someone prevents that goal and therefore we take out our frustration on someone Berkowitz’s modification – argues that frustration is the root of aggression, but we’re good at keeping our frustrations in check and that there are situational triggers. Social Learning Theory (Bandura) Does Violence in the Media Make People more Aggressive? o By the age of five the average child is watching two to three hours of television a day. By the age of 18 the average American has watched 40,000 murders on television. o Catharsis hypothesis – by viewing aggression out there, we purge our own desires Effects of Other Violent Media o Video Games
