Implicit Personality Theories o Another type of schema o A way of “filling in the blanks” by grouping [personality traits together o Cultural differences o We want to know what’s inside other people – their feelings, motives and dispositions o How do we figure this out? Attribution Theory: The all important “why” question o How do we explain the causes of other people’s behavior? o Why is it important to do so? o Attributions of internal versus external factors. If we respond to someone based on an internal, we attribute that to their disposition. If we respond to someone based on an external, then it was out of their control. o Kelley’s Covariation Model: Why did Joe kick Fido? Something about Joe (internal) or something about Fido or the situations (external)? Consensus Information: To what extent do other people behave the same way
