How do people name their babies? o Parents often strive for originality and uniqueness. o “Original” names become faddish because we don’t realize that other people like it too Why is it a topic for Social Psychology? o We understand ourselves in a social context o We use other people to learn about ourselves 1 st Step: Gaining a sense of self o The mirror test as a measure of the self-concept Even people don’t have a sense of self until age two Animals don’t have one Chimpanzees would look into a mirror and were fascinated by it. The researcher would anaesthetize the chimp and put a red mark on the chimp. If you recognize that the animal in the mirror is yourself then you should touch yourself. Elephants passed the self-concept test. How do people come to know themselves? o Introspection – the process through which we look inward. Where we check on our own desires and act on them. o
