Organelles that process energy 1. Mitochondria – cellular metabolism (ch. 7) - enclosed in highly folded double membrane - site of energy producing reactions 2. Plastids – photosynthesis (ch. 8) - plants & some protists - Ex: chloroplasts - site of photosynthesis Other Organelles 1. Vesicles - formed in ER & transport materials to Golgi - transport material from Golgi out of cell – exocytosis - food vesicles: from endocytosis of cell membrane 2. Vacuoles - In plants & protists - contain water & soluble substances - water balance, food intake Other Organelles 3. Lysosomes - membrane enclosed - contain digestive enzymes - break down proteins, lipids, carbohydrates - process debris, worn out organelles 4. Peroxisomes - contain many enzymes - break down toxic peroxide Cell Membranes – Chapter 5 Cell membrane basics: - all cells enclosed in cell membrane - structure of membrane similar for all cells - Function: separate contents of cell from surroundings Also allow exchange between inside and outside of cell
