Unformatted text preview: Jewish History Periods: Rabbinic Period o Rabbis emerged as leaders of Judaism o Centered in roman empire, Palestine & babylonia Medieval Period o In Spain, Europe = Northern Early Modern o Jews were expelled from Spain o Spain = one of the centers of Jewish population o Centered in Ottoman Empire + Poland Lithuania o Spardeme = originated in Spain o Ashanardian = organization in Europe o 1789 French Revolution ideals = emancipate the Jews = citizens of France beginning of emancipation in Europe through Napoleanic conquest = spread o to become a citizen = Jews had to give up basically autonomy as Jews + to assimilate with the nation not as Jews o original countries were repopulated Modern Period o Break up of Ottoman Empire = still many Jews Especially in Russia Transition o Antiquity to Rabbinic Fall of second temple Israelites not called Jews Religious animal sacrifices Politics = ruled own land Everything took place in temple 2 nd temple not rebuilt New structures emerged to replace the temple Synagogues more central/important Priests less sign because they focused on temple worship Rabbis became much more important Animal sacrifice became prayer = 3 sacrifices per day Political = turned into study of Jewish text daily Theaspora Judaism Religious Minority that lived within host societies o Interaction with host society affects their development and success o Good host = flourish o Antagonistic host = suffer Medieval to Early o Christianity flourished + then Islam in 7 th century o Both restricted Jews so they would convert Persecuted if they didnt convert o Not anti-semitism; anti-judaism o Economic = church condemns loaning money Jews lent money because they couldnt own land Anti-Judaism in Medieval Period First Crusade o Liberate holy land from Islam + murdered 10,000 Jews o 1215 Jews had to wear special band in Italy Blood Libel (Ritual Murder Accusation) o Christian Child goes missing = accuse Jews of murdering them o Then, over time Jews murdered child for blood to make Matzoh Burning of the Talmud o Distinguished Christianity from Judaism o Target of burning 1242 in France 1553 in Italy Black Death o Jews blamed for poisoning wells and massacres Early Modern Period o Lithuania + the Ottoman Empire- welcomed them because they need more citizens and wanted their economy to grow o 1648 Massacres in Poland- Poland was portioned = Jews moved again- Renaissance = good for Jews integration- Reformation = wanted to convert Jews to Lutheran and turned on them...
