Girl by Jamaica Kincaid and Stay Sweet as You Are by Doug Lantry both emphasize the role of women within society. Between both readings there is the constant reinforcement of the proper way a female should portray herself in public. Likewise there is the notion that if you act or dress a specific way, your dreams or desires will come true. However while there are unifying similarities between the two readings there are also various differences. An apparent similarity between Girl and Stay Sweet as You Are is the emphasis of gender role that both authors exemplify. “This is how to act in the presence of a man.” (Kincaid, 122) There is this continued connotation of the way a woman “should” act throughout the entire story. “You mean to say that after all you are really going to be the kind of a woman who the baker won’t let near the bread.” (Kincaid, 122) It is depicted that a woman must behave a specific way in order to be valued in society. Similarly in Stay Sweet as Your Are, Lantry analyzes the stereo-typical image of a woman in the 1920’s, 1930’s, and 1950’s which was portrayed by the media. “The intended consumer in the Resinol, Lux, and Listerine ads are women, and the message of all three ads is that the product will lead to- and is required
