Interpersonal Climate : is the overall feeling between people that arises largely out of the ways people communicate with each other. It is not something we can see or measure objectively and is isn’t just the sum of what people do together. Self disclosure - is revealing personal information about ourselves that others are unlikely to discover on their own. We self disclose when we share private information about ourselves with others- our hopes fears, feelings, thoughts and experiences. Self disclosure is a key gauge of closeness. Non-verbally (offering a smile, hug, or handshake) Verbally (“Hello,” “Good to meet you”) Acknowledgement : acknowledging what another feels, thinks, or says. Non-verbally: using facial expressions or nodding our heads to indicate we’re listening Verbally- direct responses to others communication Endorsement : involves accepting another’s feelings or thoughts as valid. Confirming: “I feel the same way” Disconfirming: “Your feeling doesn’t make sense” Defensive and Supportive Climates” Evaluation vs. Description: we tend to become defensive when we believe others are evaluating us. Don’t feel safe when we are the targets of judgments. Certainty vs. Provisionalism : certainty- on e and only one right answer, valid point of view. Provisionalism- tentativeness about our own ideas and openness to other’s points of views. Strategy vs. Spontaneity- strategy- when a person will disclose highly personal informationearly in a relationship , in order to win our trust so that we self-disclose in return. When a person pauses for along time before answering or refuses to look at us when he or she speaks Spontaneity- is a counterpoint to strategy- may be thought out but is also open, honest, and uncontrived. Control vs. Problem Orientation - controlling communication triggers defenses. Controlling communication overtly attempts to dominate others or force them to defer. Problem-orientated Communication cooperatively focuses on finding answers that satisfy everyone. Come up with a solution that all parties find acceptable.

Neutrality vs. Empathy - neutral communication- a lack of regard and caring for others.(disconfirming) Empathy- confirms the worth of others and our concern for their thought s and feelings. Acknowledges others and their perspectives and demonstrates we want to understand them. Superiority vs. Equality- we feel on guard when others act or talk as if they are better than us. We feel more relaxed and comfortable with people who treat us as equals. Creating a climate of equality allows others to communicate without fear or being judged inadequate. Conflict in relationships
