Comm. review October 17, 2007 MWF 2-2:50 1. Hearing is physically receiving messages and listening. Hearing is a physiological process that doesn’t take much effort for us, while listening is a complicated and active process that takes comitment and skill. 2. To be mindful is to be fully engaged in the moment. Your mind is foucused on what is happening in the here and now. Your thoughts do not wander from what is happening in the present conversation. 3. The six steps of listening are being mindful, hearing, selecting and organizing, interpreting, responding, and remembering. 4. Three types of external obstacles are message overload, message complexity, and environmental distractions. Overload occurrs when your are presented with a sheer amount of information or when communication take place simultaneously in two channels. Message complexity is is when we have more detailed and compicated ideas that are difficult to obtain. Environmental
