4.1.1 VIDEO NOTES// UN: MISSION and STRUCTURE Macdaddy of all organizations and the biggest: UN (United Nations) -boys in blue- referred to as the smurfs because of light blue A lot of people in the world consider the UN as jokey smurf because they think it does nothing Other people think it’s good as a salvation for humanity What is the UN’s mission?? -1945 UN created -provide a forum for the states of the world to get together and resolve conflicts and disputes before they become active -largest organization in world—192 members -Vatican City is the only place not in it -not just a forum were they trying to creat—the creation was based on a puruit of human rights for the planet -because of atrocities and genocides during ww2, a consensus was formed on planet that this organization must work to prevent shit like this in the future— entire world agreed. -1948- universal declaration of human rights—adopted by entire UN -whats the point of stopping countries from fighting. If we protect individual human rights were taking care of all conflict -UN goals at this point: -facilititing cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights -if you want to stop all conflict in the world then you have to have justice for everyone. Human rights, no starving people. -most of the reason places start fighting each other to begin with is because of one of these reasons Summary of what UN is all about: -peace keeping and security -human rights and humanitarian assistance -social and economic development To do all of these things you have to have a ginormous bureaucracy- and they do Committees and subcommittees of UN -world bank, IMF (international monetary fund), UNICEF, WHO (world health org), UNESCO Major divisions of the UN: -General assembly -Secretariat -Economic and social council -International court of justice -trusteeship council -security council

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
