Nick Sherman 11/8/07 Christian Morality Prof. Kinsey Term Paper: Sex Education By the time children in the United States turn eighteen, six in ten women and five in ten men have had sexual intercourse (1). There are 750,000 unintended pregnancies in the United States every year, with more than one-quarter ending in abortion (2). This is an astonishingly high figure, and there are two sides which both have opinions on the best course of action to take in order to prevent pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. There is the conservative side, who believe in preventing the intercourse from ever taking place by promoting that sex before marriage is morally wrong and potentially dangerous. There is also the more liberal side, who believe that most teenagers will have sex regardless of what they are taught, and believe in teaching preventative measures such as birth control and condom use. I will examine both sides of the sex education debate and then form a conclusion based on my research. Abstinence-only sex education is on the rise in the United States, mainly due to funding initiatives put in place since 1996. Since that time, the number of teens engaging in pre-marital sex has declined ten percent (3). Proponents of abstinence-only programs believe that this decrease is mainly due to abstinence-only sex education offered in schools. Abstinence-only programs appeal to Christians because they believe that it helps to solidify the sanctity of marriage and the belief that sex before marriage is a sin. They argue that if contraceptive methods and birth control are taught in class, it will simply
