Holly Goodman 10/18/16 British Lit Ballads of Different Genres As times have changed, so has today’s society. Music is a medium that can help people express a spectrum of different ideas and emotions. One of the first ways music was brought into all of the world was by way of oral form. Ballads sung by songwriters and storytellers created a new way of telling stories. What is interesting about ballads is the criteria involved in the making of one. Ballads use strong beats and repetition to create the powerful story they’re trying to tell. A good representation of a modern ballad is Me and My Uncle by The Grateful Dead. This song falls into the rock genre and tells the story of a uncle and nephew cowboy duo who travel together and ultimately the uncle is betrayed. This song does a great job at telling a story but is different from other ballads because of the fact that it has no refrain. Normally ballads have a refrain to ensure that the singer will know the next verse of the song and most old ballads will always have a refrain.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
