Health Exam 1 Study Guide Chapter 2: Psychosocial Health Basic elements shared by people who as psychosocially healthy: They feel good about themselves They feel comfortable with other people They control tension and anxiety They are able to meet the demands of life They curb hate and guilt They maintain a positive outlook They enrich the lives of others They cherish the things that make them smile They value diversity They appreciate and respect nature When a person’s mental health begins to deteriorate, he may experience sharp declines in rational thinking ability and increasingly distorted perceptions Four basic types of emotions (Richard Lazarus): Resulting from harm, loss, or threats Emotions resulting from benefits Borderline emotions such as hope and compassion More complex emotions such as grief, disappointment, bewilderment, curiosity Emotionally unhealthy people are much more likely to let their feelings overpower them – highly prone to outbursts Social isolation – consequence of unstable emotional responses Presence of strong social bonds and key social supports are particularly important to social health External Factors that Influence Psychosocial Health: Family The Wilder Environment (persistent stressors, uncertainties, threats) People who exhibit the following traits are often psychosocially healthy: extroversion, agreeableness, openness to experience, emotional stability, and conscientiousness Two main biological purposes of sleep: conservation of energy and restoration Sleep duration is controlled by circadian rhythms, which are linked to the hormone melatonin Other ways to control sleep patterns: staying up late, drinking coffee, lots of physical exercise, eating a heavy meal, or using alarm clocks Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is the most important period of sleep – period in which we dream Methods for conquering insomnia: Establish a consistent sleep schedule Evaluate your sleep environment Exercise regularly Limit caffeine and alcohol
