Memo To: Dr. Sandra Chrystal From: Patricia Shi Date: 10/18/07 Re: Audience Analysis Memo Corporation Altria Group, Inc. is the parent company of Philip Morris USA, Philip Morris International and Philip Morris Capital Corporation. Altria Group owns 100% of the outstanding stock of Philip Morris USA, Philip Morris International and Philip Morris Capital Corporation. Philip Morris USA is the largest tobacco company in the United States, with approximately half of the U.S. cigarette market. Philip Morris International is a leading international tobacco company with seven of the top 20 global cigarette brands. Philip Morris Capital Corporation maintains a portfolio of leverages and direct finance leases. In addition, Altria Group has a 28.6% economic and voting interest in SABMiller, plc., the world's second-largest brewer. Anticipated values and probably attitude toward my proposal Primary focus giving areas are hunger relief, domestic violence prevention and the arts. They also make humanitarian aid grants. Similar donations have been made to other non-profit organization. But comparing to other organizations, Pasadena Birthing Project is relatively small and focused on the LA community. It’s our first time application and it’s not exactly in their focus areas. The probable attitude toward my proposal is consideration. Because this is a new proposal in the field of their focus areas, so they will have to consider if the Pasadena Birthing Project is worth the long-term partnership as their grants. Challenges and questions Why choose Pasadena Birthing Project? It doesn’t exactly fit into the corporation’s focus giving areas. What is the significance of infant mortality? Why grant funding to a minority group such as the African American women? What are the similarities and differences between PBP and other non-profit organizations that Altria has supported before? Strategy on persuasion Explain the history, success and significance of PBP Argue the importance of infant mortality in our society, especially focus on the minority group. Provide evidences Explain how this fund will help to build on corporate image and relate to social responsibilities.

New York, NY 10017 Dear Ms. Gonzalez: I am currently a USC student major in communication. I’m writing this letter to request funding for the non-profit organization I have been working with- the Pasadena Birthing Project. The mission of this agency is to improve birth outcomes for women of color in our community. African Americans have the worst birth outcomes of all major ethnic groups in the country, with preterm delivery and low birth weight rates ranging from 1.5 to 2.0 times higher than all other ethnic groups. Since 1992, over 10,000 babies have been born into over 70 Birthing Projects across the nation. Pasadena Birthing Project is not a large-scale
