Russian History 2-12 Main Features of Russian Expansion There was never such a thing as a core ethnic Russian territory that conquered other ethnicities. The first thing Muscovy conquered was Tatarstan. It was always a multiethnic project No distinction between the core territories and the colonial ones. No Home Country. Unlike England 2 processes of expansion o to the South, out of the forest zone into the steppe zone o to the West, conquering other organized societies o (also to the East, across Siberia. But not as important other than an impressive map.) To The South through the steppe, to the Caucuses mountains (but not through them) annexation of Khazan in 1552. o Conquest of one of the Khanates o Conquest of the city of Khazan, which had been the capital of the Bulgar empire, which had had a great forest extraction network o Conquest of wealth as in the forest extraction network o Muscovy doing its role as unifier and inheritor of the Mongols o Expansion into the good soil of the steppe zone Shift in the nature of the Russian agricultural system from slash-and-burn to three-fields system. Three-fields works much better in the steppe zone, and when you have a system of coercion that will keep the serfs in one place long enough
