Where does the history of a country begin? History of the territory and everyone who ever lived there? When do we know anything significant about what was going on there? When does the history of Russia begin? The beginnings of the extension of the Viking trading empire into the region o The start because it’s the first time the people there began to have contact with the larger world and the literate world o First written records in slavic: the Chronicle, 1037 Earliest one we have now: 1300s o Evidence before this time mostly archeological & birch bark records found by trading posts (usually shopping lists). We know almost nothing We must be wary of believing textbooks which tell us things so surely, based on extrapolations and guessing Most historians say that history only begins with written records 1037 = founding of Kievan Rus b/c of Chronicle o one valid answer, not the only one kievan rus always portrayed by the USSR as the founding moment of both the Ukrainians and Russians, whose histories are bound as one.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
