Then name each of the pendant groups in alphabetical order with their appropriate numbers. Doing this we see that the longest chain is 8 carbons long, and that the alkene (C=C) is at the 2 position, a methyl group at the 4 position, and another methyl group at the 5 position. Thus, we combine the methyls as ‘dimethyl’ (noting that di = two), naming it with the numbers 4,5, and note that the –ene is at the 2 position. Thus D is the correct answer. This compound may also be named as 4,5-dimethyloct-2-ene.
