Unformatted text preview: Learning and Memory: The acquisition of a behavior through experience Two General categories of learning 1. Nonassociative Learning Habituation Sensitization 2. Associative Learning Classical Conditioning Operant Conditioning Nonassociative learning Nonassociative learning : Not dependent on the establishment specifc associations between events 1. Habituation : a decrease in a reFexive response to a repeated, nonnoxious stimulus. 2. Sensitization : an increased reFex response to a wide variety o stimuli or a period o time ater an intense or noxious stimulus. Ronald Booker, BioNB 222 Spring 2008 Lecture 35 Associative learning: requires the formation of a predictive relationship between two events . 1. Classical conditioning: The formation of a predictive relationship between 2 stimuli Conditioned stimulus (CS; bell ) Unconditioned stimulus (UCS; food ) During training pair the two stimuli Test memory with CS alone 1. Operant conditioning: The formation of a predictive relationship between a response and a stimulus . Response = pressing a bar Stimulus = food or water Memory Cuts Across the Different Categories of Learning 1. Short-term memory= minutes to hours 2. Long-term memory= days, weeks, years Through practice short-term memory is converted to long-term memory Our goal is to defne the cellular and molecular basis oF learning and memory Ronald Booker, BioNB 222 Spring 2008 Lecture 35 What is a Model System A model system is an experimental setup or organism used in scientifc research to provide inFormation about more complex species Criteria For consideration as a model system Is the organism used easy to rear? Is its rearing/operation size convenient? Is it inexpensive to operate?...
